Common Illustration Questions
What types of illustration do you offer?
WSI can create original illustrations
pertaining to your specific needs. Whether
it be custom clip-art, editorial illustrations,
or you feel there is an idea you want to
express, yet you are unable to do so through a
photograph, let WSI take that idea and bring it
to life.
Our illustrators can create illustrations
that simplify complex ideas so that your viewers
can better understand what you are trying to
say. Technical illustration is often times very
important to conveying important ideas.
What is clip art?
Clipart is a form of illustration that is in
a digital format for use with office documents,
website creation and other forms for visual
display. Clipart websites and software packages
are available for relatively low costs and cover
a verity of subjects.
What is the difference between rights reserved
illustration verse royalty free illustration?
A rights reserved illustration means that
anyone that uses the illustration must pay a fee
for the right to use the image or illustration.
Some illustrators will only offer rights to an
image or illustration for a set number of people
or for a limited medium. With a rights reserved
illustration, clipart or image you reduce the
chance of someone else using the same artwork
that you are. Typically rights reserved graphics
will only be available for a set amount of time
before having to repurchase the graphic. Rights
reserved images shouldn't be used in logos or
trademarks as a third party has rights to the
image and it's use. If they decide they don't
want you to use the image anymore, they can
legally request that you discontinue use of the
image or illustration.
A royalty free image means that you can
purchase the image and use it however you want
and for what ever you desire. Royalty free
images don't expire, but are also available for
anyone to purchase at anytime. If you use a
royalty free illustration in your
corporate identity there might be a chance
that someone else is also using that very same
illustration. This might lead to confusion for
your clients and customers.
WSI suggests against using either rights
reserved or royalty free illustrations or images
in your corporate identity. It is fair better
for you to invest in custom illustration for
these types of situations.
If I pay WSI to create illustrations for me, who
owns them?
All WSI created illustrations that are paid
for by our clients are the property of the
client. These items were paid for and created
specifically for them. We will not reuse
illustration or artwork create for one client in
another clients design. This is a common theme
for all of our service offerings.
How does copyright work in regards to
illustration?
Copyright law is fairly straight forward.
The moment something unique has been created
it is copyright of the person that created it.
If the person works for a company or client and
creates illustrations, graphics or artwork using
company time and materials, the copyright
belongs to the company that provided the
resources to create the artwork. In other words,
designers that work for a company don't own the
artwork they create while at work.
The copyright of any custom created image,
illustration or graphic can then be transferred
to others by contract or agreement. WSI has a
standing agreement, which is included in our
quotes and proposals, that all copyrighted
materials created by a client, including:
illustration, graphics, photography and clipart,
transfer it's copyright to the client that paid
for their creation.
With WSI you really get to keep what you pay
for.
What is an EPS file? Do I need one?
An EPS file or encapsulated post script file
is a vector based illustration. It is important
to have a copy of your illustration work and
even more importantly it is in your best
interest to have a copy of the artwork in EPS
format.
Vector artwork is scalable, where other types
of artwork are not. Scalable artwork will appear
the same no mater what the display size is. If
your illustration is in a vector format it will
appear crisp and clean on something as small as
a business card and retain it's clarity when
scaled up to the size of a billboard.
WSI provides our clients with EPS versions of
any created artwork. This allows our clients to
use their custom created artwork for other
mediums.
How much does a custom illustration cost?
The cost of a custom illustration depends on
the content and complexity of the imagery
desired. Animated illustration work requires
storyboarding and character development.
Technical illustration requires knowledge of the
product or process to be illustrated. Yet other
forms of illustration only require a little
amount of information to create.
Contact us and we will provide you with
an accurate quote based on the information you
provide us.
We like what we see and want to begin a
relationship with WSI, however, we're located
hundreds of miles away from your office - will this
work?
WSI has had numerous relationships with
clients that were not located in either our Ames
Iowa or Ft. Myers Florida locations. Depending
on the scope of the application, face to face
meetings are not necessary to develop a custom
application remotely. Our attention to detail
and customer service has helped us deliver many
systems without ever having a face to face
discussion with the client.
